in 2012/13 under Christian Streich. Finishing fifth in the Bundesliga, Freiburg reached the group stage of a European competition for the first time, their third European appearance after 1995 and 2001. Six points and only one win, 2–1 against Slovan Bratislava, left them third in the group behind Bratislava and eventual winners Sevilla, so they went out at the end of the 2013 calendar year.

eternal David-vs-Goliath constellation — the grandees from Munich against the frugal club from Freiburg — matches against Bayern have been highlights in Freiburg’s Bundesliga history from the start. Freiburg won their first home game against Bayern 3–1 on November 27, 1993, with Uwe Wassmer scoring all three. On August 24, 1994 they stunned German football by thrashing Giovanni Trapattoni’s star side 5–1. “We played Bayern off the park that day,” Jens Todt later recalled, calling it a golden hour for Freiburg football.

whole world laughs at Nuremberg”: after a 1–0 defeat against fellow strugglers Dynamo Dresden on matchday 31 in 1993/94, Volker Finke said with north-German understatement that “it would take quite a miracle” to stay up. That miracle happened. A 4–0 at neighbouring Stuttgart and a 1–0 over Leipzig kept Freiburg alive, and then came Duisburg.
SC won 2–0 at the MSV and also received help from the Ruhr, where Dortmund beat Nuremberg 4–1. Freiburg had 8,000 fans at the Wedau and the celebrations were wild. One fan unfurled a banner on the running track: “Over Freiburg the sun shines, over Nuremberg the whole world laughs.”

March 9, 1996 Freiburg nailed Bayern to the wall once more, winning 3–1 in wintry conditions. Two of the three goals came from the Dutch striker Harry Decheiver, whose unconventional style initially fitted Freiburg wonderfully. He later said on SAT.1 that he had bet assistant coach Achim Sarstedt 50 marks that he would score; he ended up with two.
That qualified him for bigger tasks, but at Dortmund he never settled in the same way.

paradise for coaches, come to Freiburg. After every Freiburg relegation from the Bundesliga — 1997, 2002, 2005 and 2016 — the coach was allowed to stay. Volker Finke benefited from that rare honour three times, and Christian Streich as well.

SCF — Financial Stability Score
