“The sun shines over Freiburg … and the whole world laughs at Nuremberg”: after a 1–0 defeat against fellow strugglers Dynamo Dresden on matchday 31 in 1993/94, Volker Finke said with north-German understatement that “it would take quite a miracle” to stay up. That miracle happened. A 4–0 at neighbouring Stuttgart and a 1–0 over Leipzig kept Freiburg alive, and then came Duisburg.
SC won 2–0 at the MSV and also received help from the Ruhr, where Dortmund beat Nuremberg 4–1. Freiburg had 8,000 fans at the Wedau and the celebrations were wild. One fan unfurled a banner on the running track: “Over Freiburg the sun shines, over Nuremberg the whole world laughs.”
