The greatest achievement up to December 2019 came in 2012/13 under Christian Streich. Finishing fifth in the Bundesliga, Freiburg reached the group stage of a European competition for the first time, their third European appearance after 1995 and 2001. Six points and only one win, 2–1 against Slovan Bratislava, left them third in the group behind Bratislava and eventual winners Sevilla, so they went out at the end of the 2013 calendar year.
