had perhaps their best chance ever of reaching a national final and winning a major title. In the Baden-Swabian semi-final they lost 2–1 at Stuttgart. The big neighbour from Stuttgart went on to Berlin, only to lose the final there to Bayern.

Freiburg endured second-division tedium. For the first time since reaching the Bundesliga in 1993, they failed to bounce straight back. In 2006 and 2007 they finished fourth twice in succession. Those placings also sealed the end for club legend Volker Finke.

After winning 1–0 in Freiburg, they lost 2–0 there in the 2017 Europa League play-off. A genuine humiliation.

the three-point rule was introduced, no Bundesliga side had done worse than SC Freiburg in 2004/05, when they collected just 18 points. A squad with players from 15 countries never really came together and charged towards relegation with Freiburg’s usual attacking 4-3-3. Between matchdays 10 and 17 they lost seven in a row. From matchday 12 onwards Freiburg sat in the bottom three and by the end they were 18 points adrift of safety.

From a hater’s point of view, 2004/05 was Freiburg’s most gratifying season: 18th place and bottom, only one such relegation as last-placed side in club history; just 18 points, a three-point-era low that still stood in December 2019; 75 goals conceded and the title of the league’s shooting gallery; a goal difference of minus 45; only three wins all season, and just one away, a 1–0 at Wolfsburg on matchday two; 22 defeats; only two home victories; and only six away points, the poorest away return in the club’s Bundesliga history.

The Freiburg model never felt more worn-out or uninspired.

defeats in the DFB-Pokal. As a fresh Bundesliga side they reached the quarter-finals in 1994 and drew what seemed the easiest possible opponent, second-division strugglers Tennis Borussia Berlin, at home, only to carelessly throw away what looked like a free ticket to the semis with a 1–0 defeat. In the next season they were out in round one, 3–1 at third-tier Stuttgarter Kickers.
It was only the start of a series of slip-ups against amateurs: Sportfreunde Siegen in 1998, Darmstadt in 2001 on penalties, and Unterhaching in 2011. They were also knocked out five times by second-division clubs.
A film about SC in the cup would probably be called Beware the Trap.
